Voted 8-7 to change a longstanding ordinance barring billboards from changing more frequently than once every 60 seconds. The move is a result of a push by billboard companies that are moving toward electronic billboards.

Under the measure passed Tuesday, images on electronic billboards that face highways could be changed every 30 seconds. There is only one such billboard on city streets, at E. North and N. Oakland avenues. That one would be allowed to change every 6 seconds, part of a pilot project to test its effect on traffic safety.

Opponents cited safety issues. Voting no were Bauman, Puente, Dudzik and Aldermen Joe Davis, Michael Murphy, Jim Witkowiak and Willie Hines. Murphy plans to urge Mayor Tom Barrett to veto the measure.
