Youth engagement in democracy Children and young people often have different experiences and views to adults, which enrich discussions and improve decision making. They have a right to be included in local democratic processes but tend to be put off by formal procedures and the party political system. At a time of falling voter turnout and lower levels of trust in democracy, it is vital that local councils engage with young people to listen to their opinions, provide feedback and involve them in shaping how services are delivered.
Where local authorities have taken creative and positive steps to consult with young people and involve them in decision making, they have been impressed by their interest and commitment.
The Local Government Group report 'Youth engagement to strengthen democracy' provides a summary of the resources produced on youth engagement in democracy in 2010 and 2011.
