'Bakery Row' mulled

Thursday, October 05, 2006 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

More than 200 people crowded into Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside last night to brainstorm in anticipation of developers' interest in what's being called "Bakery Row," Penn Avenue between Fifth Avenue and East Liberty Boulevard.

They were urged to consider how they would want the influence of development to stretch beyond that corridor, from Mellon Park through Shadyside and up Penn into East Liberty.

Councilman William Peduto organized the event, urging "a communal vision, instead of waiting for development plans and fighting like hell" against them. In this way, he said, "before developers go to the city, they have to go to the neighbors."

Architect Rob Pfaffmann showed slides of historic photos showing streets that once connected. He challenged the audience to consider where connections might be regained for a better urban experience, including pedestrian use.

Rob Stephany of East Liberty Development Inc., said a blog will be set up to reveal last night's input and collect more public input. Acknowledging the keen interest among developers, he said the process should be concluded in two months "so designers can start working overtime" to produce a plan.
