Gil Brooks was considered one of the top football coaches in Pennsylvania, building the Philadelphia St. Joseph's Prep program into a perennial power. But Brooks suddenly was fired last week by St. Joseph's president, Father George Bur.
Brooks had a 162-57-2 record in 18 seasons with five Philadelphia Catholic League championship.
"They didn't like the yelling that I did," Brooks told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "But my bark was always bigger than my bite. The kids understood that. But, obviously not everybody gets it.
"Not much was expressed to me at all. I just don't think Father Bur liked my style of person. He said, 'There have been some complaints.' I said, 'What kind of complaints?' He said he did not have to tell me."
