- In the May, 2001 GOP Primary, I was a candidate for Mayor, City of Pittsburgh. I called for and was able to obtain with the support of the city's party chair and committee, an open primary. The voters of the party in the city could elect a candidate of their choice rather than just the party committee. The open primary was held and it was a much more 'democratic' effort, with real accountability to the voters.
- The City's GOP Committee held a "Burgh Straw Poll" in the election season in the spring of 2001. That event was not a legit endorsement, but hosted for extra candidate and campaign visibility for both candidates.
