I was really disappointed to lean that Elizabeth Seton elementary school in Sheraden is going to close it's doors after this year. Seton is where I attended from 2nd to 8th grade. It has always been a wonderful school with wonderful educators in it. A financial backer of the school is not giving as much aid as he has in previous years and if the school would remain open for the next school year the school would have been forced to charge tuition rates of over $7000 a year. Elizabeth Seton has received nonprofit financial assistance to remain open in recent years. The Maronda Foundation, created by the family that owns Maronda Homes and supports local Catholic schools, has given Elizabeth Seton more than $1.85 million since 2003. Thank goodness for great foundations like the Maronda Foundation. This Foundation allowed children to get a wonderful Catholic education that they might not have got otherwise. What worries me about all of this is that with each Catholic school closing it creates less alternatives to our failing Pittsburgh Public School District. My family saw the rising tide of the school district and never allowed me to attend our community schools. I can never repay them for this. I might not be where I am today without my Catholic school education. This area is a much worse place because of this closing.
I am also concerned about what the Catholic Diocese is going to do with this property. Is it going to sit vacant? Will it be sold? These are questions that are in need of answers.
